The Role of Graffiti Shops
Graffiti really gained a foothold in the Netherlands during the 1980s, introduced primarily by American and European street artists in Amsterdam. In the early years, graffiti was mostly seen as a form of vandalism and was met with heavy-handed government enforcement. However, this gradually changed as graffiti became increasingly recognized as a form of street art.
The Waterlooplein in Amsterdam was a popular meeting spot for young creatives, including many graffiti artists. A flourishing subculture emerged here, with graffiti as a central element. For a long time, there was a market stall at Waterlooplein that sold the very first real graffiti spray cans in the Netherlands. Since then, many more places to buy graffiti gear have opened up.
In the 90s, the popularity of graffiti in the Netherlands exploded, evolving into a full-fledged subculture where young artists began to focus on murals and street art pieces. This led to the rise of various graffiti crews and collectives who increasingly showcased their work in public.
Today, the Netherlands boasts a vibrant graffiti and street art scene, with many talented artists creating beautiful, colorful, and inspiring works on walls and surfaces throughout public spaces. This growth has also triggered a significant increase in specialized stores—the so-called graffiti shop.
